Debashish Sarbeswar Mohanty popularly known as Debashish Mohanty was born on July 20, 1976 in Bhubaneswar, Odisha. He is a right arm medium fast bowler. Mohanty made his first class debut in 1996-97 capturing 22 wickets for Odisha in the Ranji Trophy. He was selected for India A’ for S.A.A.R.C. tournament in Bangladesh in February 1997 and impressed coach Srikanth with his bowling in the tournament.
He has played 117 ‘first class’ matches in his cricket career with an average of 15.10. He has scored a total of 1359 runs in these matches, with the highest score of 97. He has played in 2 Tests and 45 ODIs from 1997 to 2001. He has got much of his success in ODIs averaging under 30 and taking more than 1 wicket per game. But he got a very little chance to prove himself in test cricket for India. He has taken 4 wickets in tests and 57 wickets in One Day Internationals.
He was the second highest wicket taker for India in 1999 World Cup after Javagal Srinath. He played a very important role in the Sahara Cup Series against Pakistan in Toronto in the 1990s. However, with the return of Ajit Agarkar in the Indian team, his opportunities dwindled and he became in and out of the team for many occasions. He was dropped in 2001 and slipped out of the International reckoning.
The last ODI match played by Debasis Mohanty was against Srilanka, which was held at Colombo on July 22, 2001. Currently Debasis Mohanty has been appointed by Orissa Cricket Association as the Coach for Odisha Ranji Team. He replaced the former Coach Michael Bevan, who returned to Australia due to some family problems.
