Migratory Birds have Started Arriving at Chilika Lake
Migratory birds have started arriving at Chilika Lake India’s largest brackish water lagoon. Every year, lakhs of migratory birds from Siberia, Iran, Iraq and Afghanistan visit the Chilika lake in October and return in March.
They were spotted at Chilika’s Mangalajodi and Nalabana island, which is the designated bird sanctuary within the 1,100 sqkm lake.
The birds have started arriving, but we are waiting for the water level to recede and mudflats to get exposed. More birds will arrive in December and January. We have taken steps to protect the avian guests, said divisional forest officer, Chilika, B.R Das.
The focus is on ensuring a disease-free stay for the birds and steps against poaching. About 18 camps have already been set up.
